The power struggle at the heart of the Labour government, and the very personal battle between its two most influential figures has been common knowledge for years. But what has surprised many in these latest revelations is the shear mass of human energy and endeavour that went into perpetuating it. Endless meetings courting the favour of parliamentarians and commentators, the commissioning of opinion polls to discredit the PM, the exchange of letters and scribblings…imagine if such a focus had been fully applied to the business of using high office to actually improve peoples’ lives. Cynics might argue that the single-minded ambition required to reach the top of Government means all Governments become ravaged by the in-fighting of their own leaders.
