NHS Reform “Its not a U turn” says Cameron

"Its not a U turn"

So, without meaning to dwell on the past, it seems rather timely to have a brief update on the goings on with the ever popular NHS reforms. Following a speech by Cameron, Clegg and Lansley to Guy’s Hospital yesterdays, it has emerged that agreements and compromises have been made on the new bill. Some right wingers are claiming this is a watering down of the policy for the sake of reeling in more support to the planned boundary changes vote in 2013. Both Clegg and Cameron, however, stand firmly behind their strap line that this was a listening exercise, saying ‘we have now listened and we have learned… this is your NHS and we are going to put you in the driving seat.’

The changes to the bill are as follows:

  • Allowing some control of the purse strings to hospital nurses and doctors.
  • Relaxing the 2013 deadline for the changes and instead allowing them to happen when Drs are ‘ready.’
  • The integration of NHS services is to be promoted alone, without emphasis on price competition between private clinics and hospitals which will be seen as unfavourable.
  • The so called ‘cherry picking’ of profitable operations will be disallowed to private providers of services, as well as the slowing down introduction of ‘any qualified provider’ to deliver NHS services.

Milliband however sums it up as “a waste billions of pounds in a ‘bureaucratic re-organisation.’” It will be interesting to see how this one pans out at in todays pending PMQs. Watch this space for a round up the goings on!
